Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best grinding disc for metal?
That depends on the metal and the job. For general work on mild and structural steel, a standard aluminium oxide grinding disc handles weld removal, edge shaping and surface prep well. For stainless steel, use an INOX-specific disc to avoid iron pickup and staining. For harder metals, heavy stock removal or where disc life matters, a ceramic grain disc will cut faster and last longer. For rust and paint stripping without heavy material removal, a poly strip disc is the right tool. Match the disc to the material and the task first, then the grinder.
What size grinding disc do I need?
The size you need is dictated by your angle grinder. Our range covers the standard UK sizes: 4" (100mm), 4.5" (115mm), 5" (125mm), 7" (180mm) and 9" (230mm), with a 22.23mm bore to fit standard angle grinders. Smaller discs (4.5" and 5") give you better control for detailed work, edge finishing and tight spaces. Larger discs (7" and 9") remove more material faster and reach into deeper cuts, but they're heavier to handle and need a larger grinder. Check your grinder's maximum rated disc size before buying, and never fit a disc larger than the machine is rated for.
What is the difference between a grinding disc and a flap disc?
A grinding disc is a solid, rigid disc (usually 6mm or 7mm thick) that removes material aggressively through abrasion. It's built for heavy stock removal, weld dressing and shaping. A flap disc is made of overlapping abrasive cloth flaps bonded to a backing plate. It grinds and finishes in one step, wearing gradually to expose fresh abrasive, and leaves a smoother surface than a grinding disc. Use a grinding disc for heavy material removal, and a flap disc for blending, finishing or lighter grinding where surface quality matters.
Are ceramic grinding discs better than standard ones?
Ceramic discs cut faster, run cooler and last longer than standard aluminium oxide discs, particularly on harder metals, stainless steel and heat-sensitive materials. The ceramic grain is self-sharpening: as it wears, it fractures to expose fresh cutting edges, so the disc stays aggressive throughout its life. They cost more per disc but often work out cheaper per job because you get through fewer of them. For regular work, harder materials, or where speed and disc life matter, ceramic is worth the step up.
