Metal Polishing Discs and Cleaning Compound Bars
At TEC Products Ltd, we supply a full range of metal polishing discs and cleaning compound bars as part of our wider abrasives and finishing products collection. Whether you're removing deep scratches from stainless steel, bringing aluminium up to a bright finish, or polishing brass to a mirror shine, the right combination of disc, wheel and compound makes the difference between a rushed job and a proper finish.
Choosing the Right Compound and Disc
Metal polishing follows a sequence, from coarse to fine, with each stage removing the scratches left by the last one. Skipping a stage or using the wrong compound leaves visible marks in the final finish, so the process matters as much as the product.
Cibo's polishing compound bars come in four grades, each supplied in approximately 1kg bars and colour-coded for quick identification. Three of the four form the standard stainless steel mirror finishing sequence (PV569, PV101 and PV102), with PV05 as a versatile bright finishing option that also works on aluminium and plastic.
PV569 (black) - Cutting compound
The starting point for heavy scratch removal, weld dressing and surface cleaning on stainless steel and harder metals. Used with a sisal mop for aggressive cutting, PV569 removes deep scratches and prepares the surface for the finer grades that follow. This is where you start on any job that needs mirror finishing or serious surface restoration.
PV101 (green) - Bright finishing compound
Brings stainless steel to a milky bright appearance, refining the marks left by the cutting stage. Used with a stitched or loose cotton wheel, PV101 is the middle step in the stainless mirror-finishing process. On its own, it produces a bright working finish suitable for architectural and workshop applications.
PV102 (pink) - Mirror finishing compound
The ultra-fine final stage. Used with a felt disc or a loose cotton or flannel mop, PV102 takes the surface to a full mirror finish with no visible scratches. Typically applied after PV101 on stainless steel, or directly on softer metals that don't need heavier cutting first.
PV05 (off-white) - General bright finishing compound
A versatile bright finishing polish suited to a wider range of materials, including aluminium and plastic as well as stainless steel. PV05 is the practical choice when you're working across mixed materials or want a bright finish without following the full stainless steel three-stage sequence.
Cleaning between stages matters. Coarse compound residue carried across from an earlier grade will contaminate the finer compound and leave visible marks. Wipe the surface, change wheels between grades, and keep a separate wheel or disc dedicated to each compound. Vienna Chalk makes the degreasing step between stages easier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which polishing compound do I need for stainless steel?
Cibo's range covers four grades, and three of them form the standard stainless steel mirror finishing sequence. Start with PV569 (black) on a sisal mop for heavy scratch removal, weld dressing or restoring badly marked surfaces. Move to PV101 (green) on a stitched or loose cotton wheel to bring the surface to a milky bright finish, refining the marks from the cutting stage. Finish with PV102 (pink) on a felt disc or loose flannel mop to achieve a full mirror polish. For a bright working finish rather than a full mirror, stop after PV101. PV05 (off-white) is the fourth grade, and works as an alternative bright finishing compound on stainless if you're also polishing aluminium or plastic and want one product that handles mixed materials. Keep a separate wheel for each compound to avoid contaminating the finer grades with coarser residue.
Can I use metal polishing compounds on aluminium and brass?
Yes, but softer metals need gentler compounds and lighter pressure than stainless steel. Aluminium and brass polish quickly and can overheat or gouge if you use too coarse a compound or press too hard. Start with a finer grade than you would on stainless, use a softer wheel (loose cotton or flannel mop rather than sisal), and let the compound do the work. For brass in particular, an ultra-fine compound on a soft mop will bring the surface to a bright mirror finish without much cutting needed. Always clean the surface between stages to stop coarser grit from marking the softer metal.
What is the difference between a sisal wheel and a cotton mop?
Sisal wheels are stiff and coarse, paired with a cutting compound like PV569 for heavy scratch removal and the first stage of polishing. Cotton mops are softer and used with the finer compounds: stitched cotton for the middle stages, and loose cotton or flannel for final mirror buffing with PV102. Rule of thumb: sisal for cutting, cotton for finishing.
